The Appalachian Heritage Alliance grew out of the Wolfe County Arts Association. Wolfe County, KY, is one of the most beautiful but "economically distressed", as we now call the situation, counties in Appalachia.  The following  impressive list of performances, retreats, educational field trips, community education and classes is due to the work of community members, local business, civic, and governmental organizations. However, we could not have accomplished this without the long term support and guidance of the Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The goal for our Community Performances and Educational Field Trips for students is to present both Appalachian and culturally diverse programs. It is important, especially for the students, to see that performers representing our Appalachian Heritage are as talented as those from anywhere and that Our Story is unique and interesting to the rest of the world.

  Projects

Swift Creek Arts and Crafts Gallery.  Venue for area artists and crafts people to show, demonstrate and sell their work. Located in downtown Campton, KY.

Eastern Kentucky Heritage Monument Project. The Appalachian Heritage Alliance has been the driving force behind this amazing project. The Mountain Parkways Trails Corridor, a division of Southern and Eastern Kentucky Tourism and Development Association representing Estill, Lee, Magoffin, Owsley, Powell, and Wolfe Counties, has embraced the Monument as an economic development priority.

Rediscover Bicycle America- Joe Bowen retraces his historic 14,000 mile bicycle ride across America. This time he teaches an on-line class to the students of Eastern Kentucky.

Governor Bert T. Combs Statue Project. The AHA is helping in the grass-roots initiative to honor the memory and legacy of Bert T. Combs with a life-sized bronze statue.

Appalachian Festival. A partnership with the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center and the Lexington Public Library.

Music in the Park. This partnership with area civic and business organizations brings live local bands to perform free traditional and Bluegrass music in Campton, KY, on Thursday evenings throughout the summer.

Swift Creek Quilter's Guild. Local quilters of all ability levels gather every other Tuesday morning for quilting. Current group project is the making of lap quilts to donate to the Nursing Home. This is a partnership with the University of Kentucky Extension Service Office.

Friends of the Red River / KY River Authority.

We sponsor two educational projects with the Friends of the Red River and the Kentucky River Authority. The first is hands-on field biology experiences to students at Powell County High School. The second project helps with expenses in cleaning the Red River. This project will enable the Friends of the Red River to clean ten more miles of the Red River and to purchase rafts to pick up the solid waste in the Red River in the future.

Appalachian Out-Reach Programs.  The Appalachian Heritage Alliance joins with organizations throughout the region to provide cultural arts and educational programs.

Arts and Educational Programs. We work in partnership with schools, adult education, family literacy, libraries and Head Start to bring arts programming to their facilities. We provide a variety of workshops for the community.

Coping with Change through Creativity. A partnership with Kentucky Foundation for Women to provide a series of workshops to help local women through the changes in their lives.

Red River Gorge National Scenic Byway. The Appalachian Heritage Alliance is working with Southern and Eastern Kentucky Tourism Development Association (SEKTDA) to beautify the Red River Gorge area.

Hazel Green Academy Life Long Learning Center (1998-2003) The WCAA and the Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) collaborated to turn a deteriorating pre-Settlement type School (the first educational facility in the mountains of eastern Kentucky) into a Life Long Learning Center. CAP fixed up and maintained the buildings and the WCAA provided the programming and managed the facility. Following the tragedy of 9/11, donations decreased to the point where CAP had to withdraw from the project. The WCAA could not continue on its own and the project ended. It was a great run. We did a lot of good things for the people, and especially the children, of the area.

Where Art Meets Ed. A week-long professional development event for teachers and artists. Cosponsored by Afamba, AHA,  Appalshop, and the Foothills Artists. An annual event for five years. Oh my, this was arts education at its best.
